Open Day at Train 1900: A Journey into Railway History
An opportunity not to be missed for train enthusiasts and the curious of all ages.
Discover the secrets of steam locomotive maintenance and operation through guided tours offered by the volunteers of Train 1900. They provide a behind-the-scenes look at the railway world, as well as the history and functioning of the association.
The ProActif workshops will also be open, offering an immersive experience in the renovation of railway equipment and the professions offered by the employment reintegration program, which has been active on the site for over 20 years.
Captivating demonstrations of blacksmithing and artistic metalworking will allow visitors to observe these ancient techniques up close.
The curious will also have the chance to see the motorized draisine in action and to participate in draisine races for an adrenaline rush.
For the younger visitors, a special craft workshop will be organized where they can build and paint their own wooden locomotive. These locomotives are compatible with wooden train tracks from BRIO, IKEA, and other similar brands, allowing them to take home a unique and personalized souvenir.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a steam locomotive up close, directly on the station platform. Exceptionally, four steam locomotives will be in operation: ADI 12 – Hanomag from 1903, AL T3 – Grafenstaden from 1891, Energie 507 from 1946, and Cockerill 503 – John Cockerill from 1920.
For visitors, there is no better way to reach Fond-de-Gras than by taking the Train 1900, departing from its platform in Pétange (Rue de Niederkorn, free parking). Departures are scheduled at 11:00 AM (Diesel), 1:15 PM, 2:15 PM, 3:30 PM, 4:15 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6:15 PM (Diesel). Price: adults €14, children (5-11 years) €11.
The mining train “Minièresbunn” will have three departures: at 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM, for an impressive journey into the heart of the mine.
At the buffet of the charming Fond-de-Gras train station, grills, fries, homemade cakes, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
